Causes and Charity Work
Piuma's (py-ooma's) record label, Shining Light Records, supports nonprofit organizations that work towards: 1) Creating a sustainable natural environment, and 2) Creating an equitable educational system. A portion of proceeds are donated to effective nonprofit organizations, that tackle these issues.
Environmental Sustenance
We support environmental nonprofit organizations that work toward protecting the natural environment. The musical score to Surfrider's documentary trailer, The Twenty, was composed by Piuma—who helped the organization raise over $80,000 to protect the last twenty miles of undeveloped and unprotected Southern California coastline. On December 17, 2015, Piuma published an article and video going behind the scenes of the EP creation process, giving insight into Making an Environmentally Friendly Vinyl Record. About a year later, Piuma published an article on Building an Eco-Friendly Recording Studio highlighting ways to utilize recycled materials, energy efficiency, renewable power, as well as carbon offsetting through planting trees in the Angeles National Forest, through TreePeople. In December of 2019, Piuma published an article on Powering Music with the Sun; as a Sierra Club member, Piuma supports their mission. Additionally, The Arbor Day Foundation will now be receiving donations with five trees being planted for each sale of the limited edition Piuma EP.
Educational Equity
A Teach for America alum, Piuma (David Small) dedicated two years to help inner city children, in the City of Watts, California, learn to read—after having been seriously disadvantaged by a broken educational system. We support Teach for America as well as other nonprofit organizations that work toward ensuring that every child, in this great nation, has the opportunity to attain an excellent education.
